CWA COMMENTS ON HMRC DOUBLING STAFF TRAINED IN TAX EVASION; MUST TACKLE NON-COMPLIANT CAR WASHES
11/09/2025
Commenting on HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC) doubling the number of its staff trained in tax evasion, Gordon Balmer, Executive Director of the Car Wash Association (CWA), said:
“Whilst it is encouraging that HMRC has increased resources to tackle tax evasion by doubling the number of staff trained in surveillance, it is vital that these resources are focused on the worst offenders. The scale of non-compliance is extremely alarming and these operations undermine legitimate car washes. Research conducted by the CWA estimates that non-compliant hand car washes are costing the Treasury up to £500 million annually in lost tax revenue through the non-payment of VAT and National Insurance.”
