CAR WASH ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR ENFORCEMENT AS HOSEPIPE BANS SPREAD ACROSS THE SOUTH EAST

11/07/2025

“As the UK experiences warmer weather and water companies respond with hosepipe bans to cope with demand in the absence of rainfall, authorities need to crack down on non-compliant hand car washes that continue to operate unlawfully” said Brian Madderson, Chairman of the Car Wash Association (CWA).

South East Water is the second water supplier to introduce a temporary hosepipe ban, affecting over 1.4 million customers across Kent and Sussex.

Brian Madderson concluded: “With restrictions tightening and water scarcity becoming a pressing concern, CWA warns that rogue hand car washes are likely to ignore hosepipe bans and continue using large volumes of mains water without the necessary permits in place to discharge toxic car wash effluent.

“The CWA is calling on regulators, water companies and local authorities to take urgent action to enforce water use restrictions and shut down non-compliant sites that undermine legitimate businesses.”
