RESPONSIBILITY

The CWA is committed to ensuring that all the environmental regulations
that apply to commercial car washing are being enforced.

The main issue is what happens to the detergents and chemicals used in
the wash. If they are not dealt with safely and responsibly, then
effluent can run into storm drains and pass untreated into the local
water system.

This can occur where operators act illegally and allow it to happen.
Or where car owners wash cars in their driveways, unaware of where the
water runs off to.

It is the CWA’s aim to regulate the industry, and raise awareness of
the issue with the general public.

See diagram on the right which explains how effluent should be treated.
